Skincare Favorites

September 27, 2017

Apologies in advance for those looking for a blog post with respectable literary merit and heartwarming insight. This post will instead be a collection of some of my favorite skin care products because I have developed quite the obsession. While working at Ulta Beauty, I learned the basics of skin care and had the opportunity to try out a lot of products, which led me to developing some new favorites. I have problem skin which I have been struggling with since high school, so anything that promises to make my skin better in any way I am drawn towards. I am working towards beautiful skin that looks presentable without makeup but also is a smooth canvas for when I do want to wear makeup. These are the products that are helping me get there.

* Note * I also use a prescription acne gel and foam that I did not list below

Makeup Removal

1. Yes To Cucumbers Micellar Cleansing Water

I use this micellar water on a cotton pad to remove eye makeup especially but also to cleanse my skin throughout the day if I feel like I need to freshen up. It smells like cucumbers and gets all of my makeup off without stinging my skin which I would assume we all try to avoid.

2. Simple Micellar Make-Up Remover Wipes

If I have on a lot of makeup (or run out of cotton pads to use with the micellar water) I use these wipes. They are big enough that you can fold them multiple times to get some use out of the entire wipe, and they remove makeup without stinging unlike some other wipes I have tried in the past.

Face Washes and Scrubs

1. Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash

This face wash is my all time favorite. I use it morning and night because it makes your skin feel literally squeaky clean, and there is nothing more you could want in a face wash. I use the smallest amount possible and it foams up enough to cover my entire face. Because you only need a little bit, it lasts forever.

2. Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub

I use this scrub if I am going to be using a mask to prep my skin or if I need a deep exfoliation. It is not too harsh, but it gets the job done.

3. Dirty Works Pore-Fect Face Scrub

I bought this face scrub at Marshall's for around $5. I use it when I shower after the gym because it has menthol in it, so it makes your skin feel cold and tingly which is exactly what I want after a workout.

Face Mask

1. Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Mask

This mask is the best mask I have tried. It is thick enough that it feels like it's actually working on your skin without being too harsh. It doesn't hurt to remove. It cleans impurities from your skin and makes your skin genuinely appear clearer and cleaner.

Toner and Facial Spray

1. Mario Badescu Facial Spray in Aloe, Cucumber and Green Tea or Aloe, Herb and Rosewater

This is definitely the most basic thing on the list, but I love it anyways. I use this as soon as I get out of the shower or after washing my face to cool my face and tone. You can use it on a cotton pad to get leftover makeup off of your face or before/after makeup to give a more natural appearance to the skin. I switch between these scents because I don't have a preference.

Eye Cream

1. Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Eye Cream

I started using an eye cream so my under eye concealer would apply better and not look dry, and this eye cream does the job. I put it on at night before bed, and it's extremely moisturizing, almost greasy-feeling. By morning it has soaked into my skin and provides for flawless-looking concealer.

1. IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream

This is my favorite moisturizer, but I use it very sparingly. It is very thick and moisturizing (and pricey), so I only use it on nights after a face mask or when my skin needs extra hydration.

2. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

I purchased a two-piece set of these to use morning and night because they are not as thick as the IT cosmetics moisturizer but still provide intense hydration. I use the grapefruit-scented one in the morning to help wake me up and the fragrance-free one at night everyday.

3. Garnier Moisture Rescue Sunscreen/Daily Lotion

I use this face lotion only on days when I'm not wearing any makeup and need sun protection. If worn under makeup, it balls up and doesn't allow the makeup to blend. I use this very sparingly, but it is a great facial sunscreen.

Spot Treatment

1. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

I use this drying lotion only on specific spots on my face to reduce inflammation and redness overnight. It does not completely cure spots, but it does make them less visible and speeds up the healing process.

1. Aquaphor Healing Ointment

I put this on my lips every night before I go to bed. It makes my lips soft and doesn't sink in and go away within minutes because of its petroleum consistency. I will also use this on parts of my face like around my nose if I have severely dry skin.

2. Hempz Ultra Moisturizing Herbal Lip Balm

This is the lip balm I keep in my backpack and use throughout the day. It smells fruity and is thick enough that it stays on my lips without being too heavy.

Yes, it does take me an unnecessary amount of time to get ready for bed. But it's worth it, I promise.
